Actor and pop star Asher Angel (Andi Mack and Shazam) recently released his new single Guilty. You can instantly tell this is Asher’s most mature song to date. It’s so catchy, we’ve had it on replay while running around shouting the lyrics. Upon release, the song was added to Spotify’s Teen Beats and New Music Friday playlists in various territories. On top of all that, Asher has also started a super cool fan magazine with exclusive content just for his fans! We chatted to Asher about his new single and what life has been like in quarantine. (Side note: Asher is one of the sweetest, kindest and funniest people we’ve ever interviewed—we all need an Asher in our lives).
Hi Asher, how are you?
I’m great! I’m living my best life here in Arizona in self-isolation. I’m getting to work on my craft and spend time with my family so it’s been great.
You recently released your new single Guilty. How does it feel to finally have it out?
Oh my goodness, it feels incredible! Gosh, I’ve been waiting so long for Guilty to come out. Now that it’s finally out and the fans are getting to hear it, it literally means the absolute world to me. I’m so pumped!
Who did you work with?
I got to work with so many amazing people. I recorded the song with Tek who is Justin Bieber’s vocal producer and he was incredible. Such an amazing opportunity to be able to work with him and the song came out incredible! So thanks to Tek, love you buddy!
You filmed the music video during quarantine with your family. What was that process like?
It was awesome! My dad was the location scouter, my mom was the hair stylist and we had Kylie my videographer here. We found a bunch of cool locations to shoot and it was incredible. It turned out visually stunning. I’m super proud of it. It looks awesome!
What are your top 3 quarantine songs?
Changes—Justin Bieber, Go Crazy—Chris Brown, Guilty—Asher Angel *Asher laughs*
What’s been your go to quarantine meal?
Tacos! OMG my mom makes the most incredible tacos. I ask her to make tacos pretty much every night. They’re soooo good!
What is the screen time on your phone at now?
Oh my goodness, I don’t even wanna say. It’s not too bad, it could be worse. It’s at like 4 hours. It could be way worse, trust me.
Last year you released One Thought Away ft Wiz Khalifa. How did you react when you found out Wiz was going to be on the song?
OMG, I freaked out! I’ve been a Wiz Khalifa fan for so long and getting the opportunity to work with him was just mind blowing—like it was surreal. His kid, Sebastian, is a fan of Shazam so it was such an incredible experience. I’m so thankful that I got to do a song with him. He’s such a nice genuine human being.
How does it feel looking back on how far you’ve come from your musical theatre days?
I’m just so thankful to do what I love and it’s all because of my fans. I’m very thankful and humbled. I started off doing musical theatre at a local theatre in Arizona. You know, I still miss doing theatre so hopefully I can go back to it. Who would have thought in a million years I’d be getting to do this—living my dreams!
What are some things you still want to accomplish?
I think to “just keep working” is my biggest thing. This is what I love to do and I put blood, sweat and tears into this. Yeah, to just keep doing what I love. To go on tour is something that I still dream about—I wanna get back on the road hahaha.
Lastly, any message for the fans?
I love you guys and remember to always be courageous, be kind and be yourself!
